Miami Designer Goes Mobile

© LoNómada

LoNómada is not your average clothing boutique. For one, it's mobile, housed in a sleek 1979 vintage airstream trailer. Secondly, it's run by a fashion designer, the multi-talented Valeria Tiaga. Tiaga created LoNómada to offer her one-of-a-kind pieces in a bowl-you-over artistic setting.

“I wanted to create an atelier vibe,” she says, “with the option for transformation and performance.”

LoNómada © LoNómada This transformation is the real genius behind LoNómada. The airstream has the ability to function as a traveling pop-up bazaar, showcasing film, photography, music, artwork and fashion, created by artists hand-picked by Tiaga. The concept is to bring together a group of artists in all different multimedia forms, and serve as platform for them to present their creations. With all this artistic expression right at your fingertips, LoNómada offers visitors a shopping experience unlike any other.

Puerto Rican born Tiaga has an extensive background in makeup and hair artistry. She works on editorial, print and video shoots, which is also how she meets many of the artists in the LoNómada community. Her style is eclectic and funky, and it is reflected in her creations. A true lover of fashion, Tiaga counts Chloé, Maison Martin Margiela, Karl Lagerfeld, and Alexander McQueen among her favorite designers, but you won’t find any knock-offs at LoNómada. “These are designers whose characters and personalities I am drawn to as an artist, but I don’t look to other designers for inspiration. That comes from me. My brain is in designing mode all the time," says Tiaga.

“When I start designing I don’t limit myself to a collection, which is an advantage I have over mainstream designers. I don’t ever hold back on my instinct to create, I’m constantly designing new pieces.” This desire to create has amassed a seriously cool collection of clothes and accessories. Think Miami glitz with a twist of punk.

LoNómada © LoNómada Tiaga works with a lot of vintage fabrics, spinning them into modern, current pieces. Everything is distinctive and different; you won’t find any trendy items here. Lining the racks are patterned, textured jackets, brightly colored dresses, vintage knit tops and much more. Think of sorting through the racks as treasure hunting. You never know what you’re going to find, but it’s guaranteed to be eye-catching. Keeping with the artistic vibe, each piece’s imperfections are part of its charm. LoNómada does not play by the fashion rules so to speak. There are no limits or trends to follow. The creations are all about artistic expression, and what Tiaga and her group of artists were inspired to make.

LoNómada is also rich with accessories. You’ll find jewelry from Miami designers Medussas and Piaz, and be sure to ask for Tiaga’s Zulu synthetic hair earrings, a fresh and funky spin on the feather-earring trend. There are also amazing drawings by Nicole Salcedo and hand-made shoes that are literally works of art. In fact, everything in LoNómada is a work of art. From the airstream to the items inside to the founder herself, the whole concept is centered on artistic expression and creation, or as Tiaga puts it: “a cosmic design soup!” We couldn’t have said it better ourselves.

LoNómada is open Tuesday-Saturday from 6-10pm. They move around so be sure to check the location tab on their website before you stop by. You can also call to make an appointment to ensure you’ve got the airstream to yourself. Like them on Facebook for updates on events and details about their summer 2012 tour.
