A Marriage of Art and Design
Isabel and Ruben Toledo have known each other most of their lives, and have influenced one another's work in innumerable ways. So much so that it's hard to separate his art from her design, and her design from his art. This has never been more evident than in Toledo's 2012 Summer collection, where the idea of paint, and in fact paint itself, is center stage. Light, airy skirts look as though they were water-colored, whereas long satin dresses literally drip from the body as though covered in thick, dark oil. And the hats, oh the hats.
When I spoke with the Toledos backstage after the show, I told them that the words I kept repeating in attempting to describe the collection were "beautiful" and "incredible," but those words don't begin to do it justice. Perhaps no words will. All the better to see for yourself.
