Put a Hood On It
Picture it: you’re out on a glorious Miami afternoon, maybe you’re window shopping, running out to grab a coffee, or simply walking the dog. Then, it happens. Suddenly, the bold, blazing sun disappears and the skies open up, and before you know it rain drops the size of marbles are pouring down and all you (dressed for the hot, hot heat in a gauzy sundress, no doubt) can think is – “my hair! It’s ruined!”
The weather is unpredictable, and anything from a torrential downpour to a frizz-inducing drizzle might catch you by surprise. When the temperatures are soaring, who’s lugging around a hooded jacket “just in case?” And of course, your purse-sized umbrella is always inevitably in a different purse.
So what’s a girl to do? The solution is one of summer’s most playful trends – the hooded dress. Lightweight, easy, and glamorously practical, these were pretty much made for Miami girls to wear on these crazy, stormy afternoons. We’re not saying they’ll offer you the greatest protection from flash thunderstorms, but at least your hair might remain unscathed and fabulous.
Hooded dresses, ponchos, and sweaters strolled down the Spring/Summer runways – from Diane von Furstenberg’s sublime silky, hooded dresses and jumpsuits, and Temperley London’s shimmering gold mesh sweater dresses to the loopy, circular stretch sweaters at VPL and Nicholas K. The knits were anything but bulky, the silks subdued by jersey – this light, layered effect is a great approach for summer dressing.

Our first pick is the modern Mylene Dress by Diane von Furstenberg. In an on-trend graphic printed silk jersey, this sleek dress balances the playful proportions of the hood with a classic wrap silhouette. Wear this beauty with woven espadrilles to do casual, or glamorize with nude pumps or wooden block-heeled sandals. We think the hood could be an elegant new trend for evening.
For a low-key, casual hooded look for day-to-day, start with a basic jersey dress in a solid color, like the olive green BOBI Slub Hoodie Tank Dress or the LA MADE Cotton Slub Pima Jersey Barcelona Dress in an understated purple/gray. Do sandals or low-profile sneakers, and add personal touches with mix-and-match jewelry or a printed scarf – throw on a durable (but breathable) canvas jacket if it really looks like rain, and you’re good to go. It may also be chic to pair either dress with a tailored cotton or silk blazer, and to pull the hood over the collar as an unexpected statement.
Our last selection is not a dress, per se, but a beautiful, slouchy knitted Poncho Sweater from Subtle Luxury. In sheer nude cotton with tassels at the points of the hem, this delicate piece would work as a simple beach cover-up, or to throw on over a tank and shorts. Feeling adventurous? Slip it on over a fitted tank or slip dress and add strappy metallic sandals and luxe accessories, like a big cocktail ring or textured clutch.
