On the Scene

At SushiSamba with Diana Lozano

Diana Lozano has the colorful and magical aesthetic of a genie. When I met her recently at SushiSamba she was wearing an ear-to-ear smile, clothes that absolutely sparkled and that were shoes almost a foot tall.

With her entertainment company, CircX, Diana heads a traveling performance troupe that has amused Miami with in-your-face creativity and fun but clever shows since 2002. I caught one of CircX's recent shows at SushiSamba, and among the music, the costumes and the in-awe spectators, I was able to chat with the Ring Master.

What are you wearing?

Ring master outfit. Boots from Beatnix, socks from We Love Colors, satin dress from Cache, velvet jacket from grand and I decorated this bra myself with Swarovski crystals.

We all know the clown / performer / multi-personality beautiful buffoon that you portray on stage. But who is Diana Lozano?

I am actually very introverted and shy when I am not performing. I love either being in the spotlight or behind the scenes, but never in the audience.

My closet actually takes up 3 rooms of my house. I have thousands of costumes ranging from elaborate head-dresses with feathers, Swarovski crystals to fetish latex ensembles.

Where do you get your costumes? Is there any particular place in Miami that satisfies your fashion appetite?

I design and make most of my costumes, though, I often find myself shopping at ‘Beatnix’ for some accessories and final touches.

Do you have a stylist that helps you out with your performance outfits?

Just me, however each cast member brings his or her own style.

What were your dreams as a child? What did you wanted to be when you grow up?

I wanted to mess with people for living. Seriously, even as a pre-teen, I used to sneak into store front window displays and pretend to be a mannequin. Then I would come to life and scare people. This brought me hours of amusement.

Do you find your art to be unique?

I can’t really find it so unique anymore since, every company now claims to provide interactive entertainment. However, we originated it in Miami and are still the only ones who really understand what it is.

Does Miami appreciate and understand CircX?

We have a pretty large following in Miami, however, there are many who don’t really understand us. We still scare some people, although I would not have it any other way. If you aim to please everyone then you just end up being mediocre.

What’s your schedule like on a weekly basis?

We do a Burlesque Variety Show on Tuesdays at the Clevelander then perform at SushiSamba till 4 a.m. I teach at the New World School of the Arts on Tuesdays and Thursdays and get costumes ready for the local weekend corporate events on Wednesdays. I then fly to New York on Friday mornings to costume and perform with our New York cast another residency at Lava night club at the Turning Stone Resort and Casino.

What makes you happy?

Eating!... And climbing things.

What or who can you thank that has helped you get where you are right now?

My mentor, Octavio Campos who taught me everything and my incredible cast who continue to inspire me.

CircX performs every Tuesday first at the Clevelander and then for the late night crowd at SushiSamba. For more information visit CircX.com.
