Miami Brings the Funk
There's so much to do this weekend that even we're a little overwhelmed. The fashion world is giving Miami some love this week (and vise versa) when Funkshion hits both the Bass and the Setai. As if the nightly parties weren't enough, Miami is serving up a heaping spoonful of culture too. So, rest up Miami, you've got a lot of living to do.
Friday: HOWL at the Moon
What: South Florida Premiere of HOWL
Where: Coral Gables Art Cinema, 260 Aragon Avenue Coral Gables
© MARC by Marc Jacobs, Jonathan Saunders, Malene Birger, Tracy ReeseA Friday night movie may sound a little typical, but this experience is sure to be anything but. Head over to the newly opened Coral Gables Art Cinema - which has been four years in the works - for the South Florida premiere of HOWL. James Franco stars as iconic beat poet Allen Ginsberg as he is made to endure an obscenity trial spawned by the publication of his famous poem, "HOWL."
So prove that the best minds of our generation know how to dress, and that means looking good even when you’re sitting in the dark. The Printed Jersey T-shirt Dress from Jonathan Saunders blends casual and cool with its soft charcoal-colored jersey and awesome graphic screen-print. Class it up with a black Twill Boyfriend Blazer by Marlene Birger- roll the sleeves so you don’t look too stuffy. Step into some strappy flats, like the Francine Flat from Plenty by Tracy Reese, and stash your tickets in the Marc by Marc Jacobs Shiny Percy Cross-body Bag- the bright color pops with the print of the dress. You may even still have room for a secret stash of movie snacks.
Saturday: Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous
What: Richie Rich Fashion Show and After Party
Where: Setai Hotel, 2001 Collins Avenue, Miami Beach
When: 9:00 pm fashion show, 11:00 pm after party; RSVP to fashionmiami@funkshion.com
© French Connection, Giuseppe Zannoti, Alexander McQueen, Max and Chloe, MAC CosmeticsIf you haven’t heard about Funkshion Fashion Week by now, shame on you Miami fashion mavens! This weekend boasts a slew of fashion shows and events in Miami Beach, most of them open to the public by means of a quick RSVP email. The real party takes place this Saturday night at the stylish Setai, with none other than club-kid-turned-designer Richie Rich as the host of his own post-show after party.
This is the excuse you’ve been waiting for to go all out; so forget about chic and understated - it’s all about outrageous glamour. A sexy sequined sheath- like the French Connection Womenswear Samantha Sequin Dress - is our shimmering suggestion for a saucy take on the LBD. Pile on the style with an exaggerated platform silhouette shoe- in leopard, nonetheless, with these Sculpted Platform Wedge Booties by Giuseppe Zanotti, and a statement Patent Leather Long Clutch from Alexander McQueen. The dress’ v-neck is begging for a cool pendant on a chain; the Blu Bijoux Clock Pendant Necklace by Max and Chloe is a unique piece that will also let you keep an eye on the time as you party into the wee hours of Sunday morning. MAC Lipstick in Russian Red is the final step- voila, femme fatale.
Sunday: Easy, Breezy, Vintage Girl
What: Antique Market
Where: Lincoln Road
When: 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
© Mara Hoffman, Diesel, Pour La Victoire, Erin Wasson, Lucky BrandA quick glance at the clock necklace you wore last night to Richie Rich’s party tells you that it is now Sunday, and you haven’t left the beach yet. No matter - you’ll be just in time to scope out the Lincoln Road Antique Market. Taking place on every other Sunday of the month, this market is a goldmine of awesome vintage finds.
Just do a quick change into something simple that still packs a stylish punch: start with a silky tank like the Blue Geometric Print Silk V-Neck Blouse by Mara Hoffman. The Technicolor kaleidoscope print stands out on its own, so tuck it into a basic Diesel Denim Skirt. Four-bow Flat Sandals from Pour la Victoire pick up on the colors in the tank and won’t give you blisters as you meander through the marketplace. Make passer-by do a double-take with gold Shark Tooth Earrings by Low Luv Erin Wasson, and keep your cash handy- because you will undoubtedly find something that you just have to possess- in a leather Back in the Saddle Bag by Lucky Brand. So get yourself breakfast and an extra-large latte and soldier on through Sunday morning - then take your treasures home and indulge in a well-deserved nap.
