On the Scene

At Vagabond with Andy Wardrobe

Andy Wardrobe’s flamboyant personality is a spectacle all it''s own. His outrageous, avant-garde fashion intimidates, and his provocative production of Back Door Bamby – the legendary party at The Vagabond – reminds you to wear your skirt a little shorter and your jeans a little tighter.

I met up with the Wardrobe man last Saturday at The Vagabond during an 80s theme party, and he gave me the lowdown on his wacktastic fashion.

What are you wearing?

Christian Louboutin red zipper suede boots. BCBG thigh high leather leg warmers. A red, black and yellow super hero-esque bathing suit from Witthall & Shon. Red leather cinch waist from Funky Cotour. Another yellow leather belt from Forever21. Club Monaco’ Yellow fingerless gloves. Paris designer Amaneti’ cropped leather 80s jacket – a $3000 baby! My Disney leather old school back-pack and a fetish yellow leather choker from Leatherwerks…and my MAC make-up!

© Pamela Wasabi / MFbFrom everything that you are wearing right now, what’s your favorite?

My Mickey Mouse bag I’ve had it since I was a little boy…

Who are your fashion gods?

Alexander McQueen, Rick Owens, Commes des Garcons, Christian Lacroix.

What’s the most expensive item you have bought so far? Was it worth it?

A Celine lime-green lamb-skin, gold zipper biker jacket. It was $6,000. Totally worth it, yes!  I wear it everyday before I go to bed.

How long does Andy Wardobe takes to get ready?

I can execute in twenty minutes a lifetime of inspiration.

What happens when you walk into your closet?

I take two things that don’t go together, I pick two colors that do not match and I make them work. A war of drobe. That’s where my name comes from.

Do you have a signature look?

What you see at Back Door Bamby, baby! Lots of leg, lots of attitude, high heels, androgyny. Warrior diva meets glammed-out super star. Yeah, cheesy but whatever.

Growing up, what influenced you to become this fashion revolutionary?

I was left alone to learn and wonder. I observed the raw, the industrial, the streets, and the textures. I absorbed it all. The environment and my surroundings growing up educated my artistic eye.

What’s the hottest nightclub where you can find the most fashionable peeps?

The Vagabond with its vagabonds.

Do you buy online?

No, never. It’s a crime! Let clothing karma get you, baby! Earn the right for clothing to find you!

What’s missing in Miami fashion-wise?

Snow, so I can wear my lamb-skin out!
