On the Scene

At Kill Your Idol with Caroline Geys

Caroline Geys has her hands full – literally and figuratively. At the moment, she’s spinning indie and electro cult classics at Kill Your Idol, as she does every Wednesday. When she’s not setting the scene here, she’s creating entire cities out of homemade textiles. These geometrically clean, colorful cities have been exhibited art Art Basel Miami and at galleries all around the magic city. You need only to look at Caroline to know that she's a trend setter. To speak with her though, is another thing entirely.

I caught up with Caroline at Kill Your Idol last Wednesday after she turned the DJ booth over to DJ Desiree Almodovar.

Describe your outfit head to toe…

Feminine and fierce! I’m wearing a pair of red vintage jean boots, high-waisted black jeans, and an orchard pink leotard by We Love Colors custom-painted by Caroline Geys. For accessories I have art deco amethyst/silver and black/silver rings and a gold and silver multi-chain bracelet

The red vintage boots I got them last summer from a boutique on Lower East Side, Manhattan. The high-waisted jeans are from Urban Outfitters. The orchard pink leotard is from local based company, We Love Colors. The rings, I got them from a hand-made lace store in Ghent, Belgium and the bracelet from a boutique in Brooklyn.

Is there a music genre or a song that can be related to your outfit tonight?

My music taste and my taste for clothing it’s a plethora of genres and styles that I mesh together. My outfit always depends on my mood. Everyday a new playlist is compiled together relating to how I feel. Tonight I can say, “Dance Yourself Clean” by LCD Soundsystem meets “Lovesick” by Lindstrom and Christabelle.

Define your style in few words…

A great mesh of vintage and new. Always a classic.

Any fashion icon or fashion influence that inspires your style?
My mood is always fluctuated so there is not one icon or style that inspires me. It is a combination of many different styles from many time periods. Being able to piece different styles together truly makes it all your own.

What’s something essential in your closet?

Every single piece is essential!

What’s your most cherished fashion capital?

My mother and grandmother’s vintage closets. They hold amazing pieces from my family jeweler in Belgium. Absolutely stunning.

Your favorite spot to go shopping in Miami?

Hmm, definitely is not just one. Vintage/thrift stores and Loehmanns. Wherever I find that piece I have to have!

What’s missing in Miami fashion-wise?

More young, hip independent designers

Besides your weekly DJing residency on Wednesdays at Kill Your Idol, where else can we find you party’ing yourself up?

The vagabond, Electric Pickle, and Grand Central.
